What is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is a highly efficient heating system that captures natural heat from the air outside and uses it to warm your home and water. It doesn’t burn fuel like a boiler — it moves heat, making it cleaner, more efficient, and cheaper to run. Even in cold Irish winters, it delivers steady, reliable comfort.
The result? Lower running costs, steady comfort, and a cleaner way to heat your home.

Typical Heat Pump Systems for Irish Homes

Heat pump systems are sized based on your home’s hear demand, insulation levels, and existing heating systems. Most homes fall into one of the ranges below.
Heat Pump Size Best For Typical Home Size Emitter Type
6-8 kW Well-insulated Smaller Home Underfloor
8 – 12 kW Average family Semi-D / Detached Radiator
12 – 16 kW Larger / older Large detached Radiator

How the Heat Pump Installation Works

Installing a heat pump is usually simpler than homeowners expect.

A compact outdoor unit is fitted beside or behind your home
Your existing boiler is removed
A high-efficiency hot water cylinder is installed
Radiators are upgraded if needed
The system is connected, tested, and optimised

Most installations are completed within a few days, with minimal disruption and no major structural work required.

Frequently Asked Questions on Heat Pump Systems

We’ve answered some common questions to help you with any concerns

Possibly — we’ll assess this. Heat pumps work best with large surface radiators or underfloor heating

The final cost of a heat pump system after the SEAI grant depends on your home, the type of heat pump selected, and any additional upgrade work required. The grant typically covers a significant portion of the installation, helping to reduce the overall investment.

Yes. Irish-approved heat pumps perform efficiently even in sub-zero temperatures.

Yes — SEAI grant approval must be in place before any heat pump works begin. As part of the approval process, a Heat Loss Indicator (HLI) assessment is required to confirm that your home meets SEAI’s efficiency criteria for heat pump eligibility.

Our team will support you through the full grant application process, including arranging the HLI assessment, to ensure everything is compliant before installation starts.

  • June 2026 External Wrap, Cavity Wall and Attic Insulation. Chimney blocked and vents inserted in all of the rooms and attic. I would like to thank Tony, the project manager and Niamh in the office for such a good experience (and all the Bluebuild people who worked on our house). Bluebuild carried out all works in a timely, professional manner with minimum distruption. They organised everything and helped with the grant paperwork. I would have no hesitation recommending Bluebuild.

  • We recently had external insulation installed on our home, and we couldn't be happier with the entire experience. The professionalism shown by everyone involved was outstanding. The quality of the workmanship is excellent, and the attention to detail is clear in the finished result. The installation crews were incredibly hardworking, friendly and courteous. They arrived early each day, worked efficiently, and were always happy to answer any questions we had. The management team were equally impressive. They were approachable, helpful and very accommodating throughout the project, making the whole process straightforward and stress-free. Nothing ever seemed like too much trouble. The work was completed much quicker than we expected, without any compromise on quality. The team also took great care to keep everything clean and tidy, leaving the property in excellent condition when the job was finished. We are absolutely delighted with the final result and would have no hesitation in recommending this company to anyone . A first-class service from start to finish.
